Unique, Independent Record Label Seeking New Talent

A unique independent record label is looking for new talent.

Psychopath Records is unique on many counts, not the least of which is its owner's steadfast belief that the Philly Sound is alive and well, and looking for a vehicle to bring it back to national prominence.

"Philadelphia is not getting all the respect it should," said 28-year-old Orlando Acosta, Psychopath's owner and president. "Many local artists are emulating a New York style and it's not original. But I know there's a groove unique to Philly, and I want to bring it back to the top, where it belongs."

Acosta, a Philadelphia native, should know. Despite being disabled since birth by cerebral palsy, Acosta began rapping at 15, and was a member of the Pack of Nine Posse, a popular area act during rap's formative years. He began Psychopath Records in 1994.

"I'm working to bring local acts to the attention of national labels," Acosta said.

Though Acosta relies on crutches to get around, his disability does not deter him. He's busy getting the elements of his organization -- which he has run single-handedly for its first five years -- more clearly defined. Besides hiring a publicist, Acosta has opened an office, is assembling a promotional staff, and is lining up investors, venues and studios for the long haul. His tireless work ethic is an inspiration to everyone he meets -- and second only, perhaps, to his love of music.

"We're not looking just for rappers, or just for R & B singers, or just for Gospel acts, or just for rock groups," Acosta says. "We're looking to give these and other genres a resource, a way to get their music heard, on disc, local radio, and in local venues. We want to be the label that helps Philly acts get their start."

After five years of laying the groundwork on his own, Acosta now seems poised to take his fledgling label to that next level.

Acosta said acts interested in auditioning with Psychopath Records should call him at (215) 854-4053.
